Full-screen slideshow of Old Delhi, India

Laundry on the railroad tracks near the Delhi Cantt station, Delhi, India (Brett H. Cole)
Old Delhi is simply mind-boggling. This slideshow shares a few images from Old Delhi in a nice full-screen format that I hope you will find immersive and engaging. (1) Once you launch the slideshow press F11 on your keyboard to enter full-screen mode. (2) Use the arrow keys on your keyboard or the arrows at the edges of the screen to load the next image. Launch slideshow.

In trying to think of the most sterile, orderly, predictable cities I’ve ever been to, Wilmington, Delaware (the financial district at least) and Windhoek, Namibia are at the top of the list. You can hear a pin drop and eat off the sidewalk. Old Delhi is the polar opposite. It’s so raw and unfiltered. Anything can happen at any moment. There are seething masses of people everywhere. Elephants share the major roads with trucks and bicycles and hunchbacked old men pushing ox carts by hand.

Despite the chaos and the traffic and noise and smog, there’s something totally endearing about it. People in Old Delhi are warm and friendly.  You can walk up to anyone and start a conversation, and they’ll likely share whatever they have with you. Their lives are not spent complaining about lacking this or that, and there is a can-do spirit that pervades everything. It’s so full of life!

You can view it fullscreen and also up to 720p (hi-def). I shot the video with a Canon 5d2 and edited the piece with Sony Vegas. I have hundreds of really interesting and beautiful still photographs of people working in India as well.

Keoladeo Wetlands, India

(Click the cross icon in the lower right to view the slideshow fullscreen)

Once a royal hunting ground, Keoladeo survives as one of the premiere wetlands in Northwest India. Located near the scrappy city of Bharatpur, Keloladeo is a gorgeous place full of antelope, waterbirds, giant turtles, and unfortunately tons of cows, which are supposedly illegal. In this slideshow you’ll see some of the iconic creatures and landscapes that make Keoladeo such an important place biologically.

A man and his four children watch hot air balloons from their motorcycle, Pushkar, Rajasthan, India (Brett H. Cole)

I just finished re-doing the keywords for all of my photographs, and I greatly expanded my Keywords Page, which allows you to choose from hundreds of organized keywords to explore the photo library.

This is by far the most complete set of keyworded photos I’ve ever had on my site, and I more than tripled the total number of keywords on the keywords page. Here are a few interesting keywords to try: turban, glasselephant, glacier, eyes, fynbos, bicycle, morning …  there are hundreds more! You can also browse photos by color (red, green, purple, etc).

Slide show tour of Bundi, India

(Click the cross icon in the lower right to view the slideshow fullscreen)

Bundi is a relatively quiet city of about 90,000 in the North Indian state of Rajasthan, with an old district centered around 650 year old Taragarh Fort. Bundi is a popular subject for photography for its striking blue houses, but the people are the main draw I think – friendly and welcoming and very photogenic. I had a great time visiting with different craftspeople, which you can see in my Rajasthan at Work video.

A few favorite portraits from Kharkheri, India

(Click the cross icon in the lower right to view the slideshow fullscreen)

Kharkheri is a tiny farming and mining village in the bucolic countryside outside of the holy Hindu city of Pushkar, India. I traveled through there by motorbike over the course of a month while volunteering at a nearby animal rescue center. The villagers are warm and welcoming, and I took portraits of probably half the people there.

Like most of my portrait subjects I tried to spend time hanging out with people and making friends. During national kite month in January I brought more than 100 kites (sturdy paper kites are 5 cents in Pushkar) to the village and handed them out to the kids. We set up a kite distribution center in the tiny general store in the village. It was a lot of fun. These were all taken in natural light with a Canon 5d2, most at 85mm @ f/1.8.

Photo Guide to Strandfontein Wetlands, South Africa

Greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), Strandfontein, South Africa (Brett H. Cole)
Please contact me to reproduce any portion of this text

Yes, they often attract birds due to nutrient loads in the water that promote growth of foods, but most sewage treatment plants don’t figure to make it onto a list of truly great birding spots. Strandfontein, a remnant patch of not-natural-anymore wetlands in the Cape Flats south of Cape Town, is a gem. The original Cape Flats must have been truly amazing. Map | Strandfontein Photos

Start by letting go of any preconceived notions of “sewage works.” Strandfontein is a beautiful place. On a windy day, with poor light, and with birds in less than ideal places, it’s enjoyable but not necessarily captivating. On a calm day, with beautiful light and birds in the right places, Strandfontein is awesome enough to make you giddy.

Chai Tea in India

(Click the cross icon in the lower right to view the slideshow fullscreen)

Chai is a part of everyday life in India. The hot, sweet drink is a pick-me-up, a courtesy to strangers, and a focal point of time spent among friends. Costing 5 to 10 rupees (10 to 20 cents) and served in glass, ceramic, or plastic cups, it is ubiquitous in Rajasthan, where these pictures were taken.

Welcome to my new blog!

I know I’m coming to the game a little late, but in early February 2012 I decided to launch this blog. While it may seem odd to start a new blog in the age of Facebook, in all honesty I’m not a big fan of Facebook, and I wanted to have a place of my own to share my work and experiences in a dynamic fashion, so I thank you for taking an interest and stopping by.

I will be using the blog to share photographs, stories, and ideas, and as a convenient means of sharing updates with the public, colleagues, and clients. You can sign up for my RSS feed to receive updates.

Please share the blog with anyone you know that likes photography, nature, or travel. All posts will be open to public comments, and I welcome public participation. Thanks for visiting!
